I was a prairie and an Appalachian schoolmarm for twenty years before tumbling into 'Harvard,' a word that I now use as synonym for 'debt.' I then became a fulltime writer, which is a sexy way of saying that rather than fine dining, like one of Dickens' urchins, I now eat porridge and watch folks fork tender morsels into their mouths. But it's a fine life, compact and plain, and it renders me easily thrilled, for there's nothing that rouses childlike joy like deprivation. My first book is "It All Began With a Bean," which answers the hoary question: "Just what would happen if everyone and everything farted at once?" It depicts the perfect storm of farts. I've two novels under contract and few other pic books too. I also wrote for many magazines this past year, which was the best possible education: editors pay you to critique your work. I recommend it rather than college. And editors don't care whether or where you went to college.
